Reviews 2004... Assembly Halls - Worthing - West Sussex Derek Gamma: 12 June - hi, went to your worthing gig last time, (XXL t shirt from the van) any news of a gig on the south coast yet, i know worthing was only half full but we did enjoy it....thanks, derek Bacon Theatre - Cheltenham - Gloucestershire Roger Marsland: 11 October - Guys. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Cheltenham show despite the small audience - it must be very disheartening to play to so few people but you didn’t let it show. This is the third time that I have seen you now (Salisbury 02 & Camberley 03 previously) and you have always been excellent and deserving of full(er) houses. I hope that you have some success in finding sponsorship to help you continue to spread the “Genesis word” - it is a worthy cause. Best wishes. Roger Marsland Barbara Bishop: 20 December - Hi Guys, I had forgotten how much I enjoy Genesis until I saw you at Bacon Theatre, Cheltenham. Shame there weren't many there, despite that the atmosphere and music was fantastic, thank you.. .. I have been singing your praises since I saw you and hope that next time you venture into Gloucestershire that the turn out is better, I would gladly help with the publicity!! Wishing you a great 2005, planning on seeing you in March & June at Swindon. Any chance of Mad Man Moon?? Barb Bishop Beck Theatre - Hayes - Middlesex Paul Davis: 10 June - Hi, I have just got home after seeing you at the Beck Theatre in Hayes. Many thanks for the excellent show. Sorry the turnout was not great,as Tony Hancock would doubtless have said about the citizens of Hayes..You Troglodytes.. I will now sit back with a brew and put the DVD on. Thanks again PD. Richard Mills: 11 June 2004 - Well done for last night. There were some excellent moments, as anticipated; 11th Earl was absolutely spot on and nicely unexpected, in fact all the Wind & Wuthering stuff was just great (ranks amongst my favourite G stuff). I'm sure you don't need me to tell you much more, you know where it was good and where it was less so, but this, as ever, is live music. All in all, we always enjoy a G2 gig and last night was no exception! One thing; can I ask, who does your lighting? To be constructively critical, and with a smile, I'd like to see slightly better use of effects at certain key moments, such as when the band really opens up into the Firth of Fifth guitar solo when the mellotron comes in, ie cut from sombre to virtually black stage with some simple white vertical beams, maybe light you from below too - then back into sombre and then repeat. To be honest, I expect the band could play with no lights, but you know how a simple thing can create a strong atmosphere, and the only reason I make this observation is because many times, the lights were good, so I guess there was an expectation, as I say, at certain key moments. Just thoughts. One other thing, and I'll say this to you, cos if I say it to him directly, he'll beat me up! - Terry should consider his choice of trousers on Moonlit Knight - the chosen pair created a lunchbox effect, if you know what I mean - we wouldn't want him frightening the children in future would we?!?! All good fun though! In all, a great evening, thanks very much. Please pass on our good wishes and thanks to the rest of the band and crew. Look forward to seeing you again in the not too distant! Cheers, Richard (& Michelle) Bob Cat: 14 June - A great night , extremely well performed. I thoroughly enjoyed the night and will make every effort to see you again. (One for the vine next time) Cinema show was excellent and everything else was above and beyond the call of duty. see you soon Bob. Colin Rogers: 22 June - David, I was at the recent show (June 10th) at the Beck Theatre, Hayes, Middx. Even though we were a small crowd- I agreed with you that we were a "top crowd". I also thought your set and stage show were the best I have seen from a Genesis tribute band. Keep up the extremely good work my friend. Regards now, Colin. Duncan: 29 June - Dear g2 I went to see you at Hayes on 10th June 2004 and I wanted to give you my feedback. My immediate reaction when I heard about this concert was that g2 must be trying to pull off the impossible by re-staging a Genesis concert from 1977 when, in my opinion, they were at their peak. An ambitious project indeed. And I have to say that with "Unquiet slumbers for the sleepers....."".....In that quiet earth" at the end of the first half I think you succeeded - I can't see how the Genesis of that period could have done it any better! I had half forgotten these tracks so it was great to hear them again. 'Steve Hackett's' distinctive style of guitar, 'Tony Bank's' great keyboards and 'Chester Thompson's' powerful drums all shone through on this. Absolutely superb! I also enjoyed "Hairless Heart", and "Entangled" for the same reasons, the latter track featuring a great vocal from 'Phil Collins'. I would imagine it's an extremely difficult voice to imitate, quite high and very powerful. The rendition of "Firth of Fifth" was very impressive and the excellent sound quality on the night made it possible to hear really clearly the bass lines of 'Mike Rutherford' and the different piano parts on the introduction. It's arguably Genesis' best ever track and you all did it justice. It was a shame that "Cinema Show" didn't seem to work as well, but with the length of the set you were playing it was quite an undertaking. Genesis were once referred to as a jazz rock group and I can see why now. Lots of long, difficult but disciplined solos, like when the drum solo in "Los Endos" suddenly stops and the rest of the band are back in again - as you captured faithfully of course. You stuck rigidly to the time period, a promoting "Wind and Wuthering" tour so 1977-ish. I would have loved to have seen Genesis then so this was the sort of track listing I wanted to hear. I have seen two other Genesis tribute bands: "The Cage" (which concentrated on Peter Gabriel material) and "re-Genesis", which again concentrated on the Gabriel material. I'm glad you stuck to an authentic playlist for 1977, as I remember "The Cage" finished up with "Ripples" which as far as I know was nothing to do with the Gabriel era. For me you are the best I've seen yet as this was in my opinion the strongest Genesis line-up, with much of the complex Gabriel era material as well as the newer and no doubt equally complex stuff included in their sets. As I said before the sound quality was very good (spoilt only by a couple of ignoramuses talking through several tracks - most noticeably through 'Horizons'). I loved the way you started the set with "Wot Gorilla". A very big thumbs up to g2, and congratulations on pulling off the nigh on impossible! Also great value with the number of tracks played - thank you! I don't feel quite so bad about missing them in 1977 now! Duncan Roulstone. City Varieties - Leeds Peter Ross: 29 April - Dear Dave et al. Last night's concert in Leeds was just fantastic. Having seen you in 2003, I have been trying to make it to one of your shows all year, and have now finally succeeded. The 4 hour round trip was well worth it! Great that the show was so well attended and appreciated. Highlights? Well, all of it. Suppers Ready and Cinema Show were just awesome. Loved Jeff's drum solo at the end as well. I'm now the proud owner of your DVD, by the way. (All I need now is a player.) Looking forward to Mansfield. All the best. Peter Ross (fan from the Derbyshire Peak District) Dave Kirven: 29 April - Hi Guys Just got back from your gig in Leeds It’s the first time we’ve seen you, but it won’t be the last. As I said to Terry after he came off stage, you guys are f@!”%ing awesome. Thanks for your dedication, you’ve allowed us to enjoy the sound we never thought we would hear live again. The size of the audience doesn’t do you justice. You are the best kept secret I’ve ever heard. Keep doing it. Leeds loved you and I hope you felt that by our reaction. Hurry back. Kind regards David and Jooli Kirven Dave Norris: 29 April - Hi boys Three of us went to see you at City Varieties Leeds last night. What can I say, absolutely stunning set, very authentic sound, just like listening to the real thing. Great light show too. Crowd was disappointingly small, shame on you Leeds, but very enthusiastic. However I thought they gave you a great reception, and you all certainly seemed to be enjoying yourselves. Musicianship truely excellent. Highlights for me Entangled, Afterglow (great song to finish first set on) and of course the obligitory Supper's Ready. Only ever saw Genesis perform Supper's Ready once & your version was a similar "hairs up on the back of the neck" experience. I will spread the word!! Thanks for a fantastic night, come back soon lads. Cheers Dave Norris Tony Casey: 29 April - Hi Again, Thought I'd drop you a line to thank you for a fabulous show in Leeds the other night. It was well worth the journey from Newcastle to Leeds. I spoke to you after the show with my two teenage kids. I was the one asking if you'd play in Newcastle. I hope you do manage to do something up here soon. The sound was outstanding and it certainly showed with the crowds reaction to you. Regards, Tony. Steven Pollard: 1 May - well what can I say about the Leeds gig, other than it was fantastic, better than Newark last year. Also I think you woud agree that we were a great crowd, really up for it and I also felt that the peolpe who were there were really knowlegable about the music you were playing. I personally met 2 old friends, one I have not seen for 21 years! Please, please come back next year, when i'm sure word will have got round and we can fill the theatre. Again, thanks from the bottom of my heart for a truly wonderful evening. Sincere best wishes to you all and keep the best band in the land alive and well. Robert Margerison: 3 May - Just found the time to write and say what a fabulous performance at Leeds on Wednesday 28th April. I've followed and listened to Genesis for the last 23 or so years and was lucky to see them twice when they last toured. But you brought it all back. I particularly enjoyed Cinema Show (fantastic drumming Jeff). I hope the audience gave you enough support to ensure a future visit. Thanks for a great evenings entertainment and sorry we kept Piers chatting at the end!! Roger Oldfield: 5 May - I saw you for the first time at Leeds City Varieties last week. Absolutley amazing! A mate had seen you perform down south somewhere and recommended I go, but I was blown away by the quality of your performance. Please come back to Leeds again as soon as possible, and thanks for a brilliant evening. Roger Oldfield Guy Vickers; Posted 6 May - Hi Chris we chatted at the bottom of the stairs after last week's show in Leeds. Once again wanted to say thanks for the show and all the hard work and effort I know go into it. You said "write" so here I am! Hopefully you'll make it up north again in the not too distant future. I'll sign up for your mailing list and keep an eye out. All the best Guy Derngate Theatre - Northampton Nigel Murphy: 22 September - Hi David, A standing ovation tonight at Northampton. And very well deserved. Another absolutely excellent show. We brought 5 friends with us this evening - and you certainly justified our recommendation. Keep it coming. All the best Nigel & Marion Della: 23 September - Guys. Caught the show at Derngate last night and just wanted to let you know that we both thoroughly enjoyed it. As die-hard Genesis fans since the 70's (yes we're really that old!), it was fantastic to hear some of the classics performed again live. Thought the drumming was incredible, and particularly appreciated the touch of "theatrics" from Terry during the show. Have checked out the website, and will be keeping an eye out for other dates in our area. Thanks to all for a brilliant evening. Genesis is dead. Long live G2enesis!! Della (and Nick) Bull. Nick Bull: 23 September - Saw the gig, checked the web site, read the reviews. Wanted to add my own comment: Derngate - Northampton 22 Sep 2004 Awesome! Nothing else needs to be said. Please play Derngate in Northampton again soon. We loved you. At fag break time, the comments were all positive. Just close your eyes and you're at Knebworth (twice). It was fantastic hearing tracks like "Entangled" and "Blood On The Rooftops" along with old favourites like "Cinema Show", "Firth Of Fourth" - "Selling England By The Pound" took me to Portsmouth Guildhall in 1980, when we queued for six hours in freezing temperatures and snow to get tickets to see the guys in a small venue - little old ladies walking up and down the huge line of fans handing out free coffee to keep us warm. Happy Days! Saw Steve Hackett at the Derngate a couple of months ago and listening to the accuracy of you sound, it was hard to believe he wasn't on stage with you last night. Superb! And the drums - wow. BUT it was all fantastic. I never thought I'd hear such great music played live again. Being a huge Genesis fan, but not really playing much of their stuff these days, I'd forgotten just how great their music was. What a pleasure it must be for you guys to recreate that sound and have the talent to make it real. Put me on the mailing list, we must see you again. Great gig in a wonderful theatre and didn't the packed audience love every minute of it. Nick Bull. Duncan Gray: 23 September - Absolutely brilliant!! First time for me seeing G2: A stunning performance last night at The Derngate, Northampton. It was almost like a 'best of' set for me with all my favourites. Great musicianship and some nice lighting touches. Even some of the subtleties of the original were there - little Phil type fills from Jeff (he was good!) and I guess Piers must have been burning the midnight oil on getting the right sounds from his Roland module. The way the mellotron choir was brought into the lead line for Entangled at just the right point and at the right level almost brought tears to my eyes (actually it did, but dont tell anyone!!) and Cinema Show was superb (again with very accurate keyboard voice changes). I heard some songs I dont think I ever saw Genesis play live - especially from W&Wuthering. The version of Watchers was better than when Steve Hackett's band performed it on that very same stage about 6 months ago. Real menacing mellotron with the right amount of phasing. (Cant you tell I'm a keyboard player!). Not sure about the Terry being a Phil look-alike as some other guestbook comments have said. He seemed more like a younger Ronnie Barker to me - but he sang well. The Phil-era songs worked better than the Peter-era in my opinion. Sound levels were about right, although Chris could have done by being a bit higher in the mix and perhaps less of Jeff's kick drum would have been better (must be an age thing - I dislike thumps in my chest!) But that's been picky. A tremendous show and I will definitely come again if touring this way (try the Stables at Milton Ketnes - Piers will show you the way!). Duncan. Alan: 23 September - Thanks guys for an absolutely stupendous performance at Northampton last night (22 September). Everything was a perfect interpretation of what I would consider the classic era of Genesis live - from the lighting to the sound, the setlist to the positioning of the drums at the side (did any other band ever do that?). I only ever got to see the guys themselves on the "Lamb" tour but to hear songs from that again and others of the same era live was excellent. I have read elsewhere in these reviews that some folks wonder why there are none of the hit singles in your show, but I think you are absolutely right to concentrate on the numbers you do. I think most people consider Gabriel Genesis and Collins Genesis to be two separate bands but when you think about it, it's really the departure of Steve Hackett that made the big difference, so stick to what you do, it's great. Your guitar solo on Firth of Fifth made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck, (so did the keyboard solo in Cinema Show) - brilliant! My wife is more familiar with the later Genesis stuff but was mightily impressed (this is not easily done!) She said that being less familiar with the songs made her appreciate all the more your excellent musicianship. She particularly enjoyed Entangled and Afterglow. The enjoyment you all get from performing these songs was evident to all in the Northampton crowd who clearly enjoyed a great night. Thanks again. Alan De Freyne. Martin: 28 September - Just wanted to add to the list of plaudits for the recent show in Northampton on 22nd sept, absolutely fantastic!!... Have seen the "big two" this year (Yes & Rush), but I have to say your show impressed me immensely... dare I say it even as good as the real thing, (only seen Genesis once in B,ham in the early eighties), but your show was top quality and have to say the attention to detail & delivery of perfermance by each individual member of the group, was outstanding in every respect! So impressed I'm even travelling up to see your show in Mansfield in Oct... A must see band! All the best, & hope some of these other venues get more people to come along, (they don,t know what they are missing!) Martin Humphreys Epsom Playhouse - Epsom - Surrey Stephen Hudson: 3 March - Hi Guys, Another fantastic show last night (March 2nd - Epson). Wasn't it Phil who starting growing a beard in the 70's? I don't remember every seeing Tony with one! Your new light show was superb. Everybody seemed to be up for it last night (G2 as ever, and audience) although the audience's response to "a flower" was shameful. Once again thanks for a flawless performance. The pre-intermission medley culminating in Afterglow was first-class. See you again soon Steve (I was the one who travelled from Southampton!) Nigel Cubbage: 3 March - Dear G2 I just wanted to thank you for a fantastic evening in Epsom last night. It was my first time seeing the band and from the first few notes of Wot Gorilla as you started up, I knew I was in for a treat. It is a shame for you that the crowd was a little small and muted to begin with, but the standing ovation at the end must have warmed you! Quite simply – brilliant! So faithful to the originals. It is a little invidious to single anything out but Watcher of the Skies and Cinema Show in particular were amazing, Afterglow brought a lump to the throat and hearing Supper’s Ready again after so many years just blew my socks off! Thank you so much for keeping the dreams alive – and come back this way soon! You may not have thought the crowd was that lively or large but as the evening went on, there was a growing sense of watching something really special - I hope the standing ovation at the end warmed you! Not having seen you before, I admit I went with a little trepidation – you set yourselves up for a potential fall in imitating the boys! But the first five minutes dispelled all that. For this old Genesis lag, it was stunning. I was 17 when Seconds Out came out, had never heard Genesis before and it altered every perception I had about music. And last night you brought all those memories back – I cannot count the times I felt emotionally moved by hearing the songs again, performed so faithfully and expertly. Supper’s Ready … who’d have thought it!! You are phenomenal musicians in your own right – that you choose to devote your talents in a way that reawakens the dreams for old Genesis fans like us is simply fabulous – thank you! Please get more dates in Surrey and the south-east. Thanks to you all – faulous night and looking forward to the next one already. As we left, I heard one girl saying “The boys are back – I can go and watch them again now.” Best wishes Nigel Cubbage Tim Ewer: 3 March - Hi Guys, Just a quickie to say how much I enjoyed last night's show at Epsom. It's the first time I've seen you, and the first time I've been to Epsom Playhouse. I thought the sound quality was awesome, which meant that I could hear every note played. Being a drummer, I was particularly impressed with the rhythm section, and the bass playing was excellent, with a nice trebly sound just at the right time.........I'll definitely come and see you guys again....thanks a lot. I work as a P.E teacher at a school for the blind in Sevenoaks, and I had a quick chat with Jeff about maybe coming over and doing a little drum clinic for some of our kids, but I'll be e-mailing him direct. Tim Ewer Mike Lockyer: 5 March - I really wanted to give my views on the show in Epsom earlier this week. This whole thing happened by chance, loitering around the public loos in the Ashley Centre one day (as you do, actually waiting for my daughter) I picked up a Playhouse brochure and saw you would be playing. Now for many years I have had an anti-tribute band attitude, partly because some bands I like eg Yes are still performing but also because I suppose I was prejudiced and have always thought there would be nothing worse than listening to some half baked band spoiling memories of years ago. However….’Seconds Out’ has been one of my all time favourite albums for ~ 23 years, (although I only ever saw Genesis once, on the ‘Way we Walk’ tour) so I thought why not. I also always preferred the early Collins Genesis to the Gabriel one. I persuaded 3 friends to come along too. The show and the music were totally A1, all my prejudices were blown away and I am still on a high from that night. I never imagined I would sit in Epsom Playhouse listening to superb renditions of all those classics, the set was perfectly arranged, I don’t know whether the setlist corresponded to a typical ‘Seconds out’ era gig (apart from Turn it' obviously) but the lighting effects and in particular the sound were all superb, and it was obvious that you had all put a great deal into getting every detail right, but importantly also enjoying playing the music. I shall certainly acquire the DVD and hope you revisit Epsom in the not too distant future. It would be unfair to pick anyone out re musicianship but as an aspiring drummer I have to say Jeff could hold his own no problem with either Collins or Thompson, I thought he had 8 arms until I saw him in the bar in the interval. Awe inspiring. Finally I reached 50 last November and you made an old man very happy! Brilliant stuff. Mike Lockyer Alan Bates: 6 March - Morning guys, how's it all hanging? Unaccustomed as I am to contacting bands in the fear of sounding like a sycophant, I had to drop a line after seeing you at Epsom on Tuesday. I have to admit to being concerned on arriving at the theatre after my long haul from Leighton Buzzard, to see what was obviously not a full house. Was this to be one of the 'Surrey' nights where the audience would be doing there best not to enter into the spirit of things and make you guys work for the reluctant applause they were prepared to offer. My concerns grew when a twat and his obviously pissed bird sat in front of me and decided to talk over the music.....why do people do that? However, once the thing got going and I had asked them to shut it, I was sooooooooooooo impressed. I saw you in Camberley last year and thought you were good then, but this time you were even better. You seemed to have pumped up the volume a bit this time, and it was nice to walk out with that nostalgic buzz in the inner ear after Los Endos. The set mix is spot on! I love the 'Absent Friends/Entangled' section with Chris's excellent guitar work and Piers opening to Firth of fifth is technically superb. I saw Genesis on many occasions, and as much as I admire Tony Banks, he cocked that intro up more than I care to remember. Terry's vocals are so clear and powerful, and without being an out and out impersonator, the memories of late seventies/early eighties gigs came flooding back. Am I the only one who thinks of Norman Stanley Fletcher when he walks up to the mike? Suppers Ready and Cinema show are still the killer tracks for me and the Afterglow ending to set one is just top drawer. I brought a mate with me this time who is allergic to tribute bands on the promise that he would not be disappointed, and he wasn't. He is a musician and has played with some good bands, live and session, and his words as we walked out were, ' How F****n good was that', and he was right, it was. Keep it up boys, and I will see you at The Beck and The Standard. Alan 'Cant Grow up, Wont Grow Up' Bates p.s What about Ripples and Robbery? Simon Doy: 3 April - Hi I know this is late but I always find feaving space after an event sorts the men from the boys in terms of memorable moments. Lets get one thing clear from the start, I thought everything you did was great so when I draw highlights from the show I mean no discredit to the rest of evening. This was my first time seeing G2 live in the flesh and having heard the samples from the website I was expecting something good. However, good is an understatement, sheer brilliance is neerer the mark. The samples on the website do not do you justice. The highlights for me were Watcher, More fool me / Entangled / Horizons(great acoustic guitar work, and the harmonics were spot on), and Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos was incredible and a very fitting finale. Supper's Ready also made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up to hear it again (''it's good to see you again''). My only gripes were with set choices (I am a fussy bugger!) and here I am being over fussy so forgive me and do not think for one moment this in any way lessened my enjoyment of the evening. These are just suggestions and food for thought. I know this is coming forwards a bit chronologically but it could create space for you to try other songs that don't see the light of day very much because of the sheer size of the repetoire you have. How about the 'In the cage' medley performed on 'Three sides Live' that runs into 'Afterglow' with the dry ice (do dry ice machines cost a lot of money?) and the deep orange glow that ended the shows in the late seventies? Only bring out 'Turn it on again' if you see too many twentysomethings in the audience! The children's chorus in 'Supper's Ready' needs to be a touch louder (I know you were using the actual recording from 'Foxtrot) By the way did you have to obtain permission to use that or is it a sneaky one? I would like to see 'Horizons' lead into 'Supper's Ready' as on Foxtrot as even though there are quite a few seconds on the album between these two tracks, in my mind they always go together. Well guys thanks for the show it was an experience I will never forget and if you offered me free tickets to see post Genesis - Genesis album (Mama and all that) or the opportunity to pay for tickets to see yourselves....yes you would win everytime! Which brings me very neatly to my next Question....when are you doing this area again? Maybe not Epsom as that venue was too small for you but how about Woking or Guildford the true home boroughs of Genesis! The Roda Mcgraw Theatre may be perfect for you(Great accoiustics!). This has the benefit of being next to the very popular 'New Victoria Theatre' in Woking (Woking being the place I consider to be the true home of Genesis being that they attended prep school in Horsell and practiced in Chobam Village...Phil was auditioned at Peter's house in Chobham), and, the Roda Mcgraw is much cheaper! Sorry to push you into playing more locally to me (I live in woking) but being blind I need you to be fairly near in order to get to you. Epsom was just on the verge of possibility. I feel sure you would pick up the fan base in this and the Guildford area. Many thanks Kindest regards Simon Doy Key Theatre - Peterborough Robert Colvin: 5 May - Thank you G2 for a sensational gig at the Key Theatre in Peterborough tonight! As one too young (honest!) to hear early Genesis played live, I was astounded at the authenticity of your sound. I shall certainly make sure I see G2 again and recommend your superb talents to my friends. Let's hope you return to Peterborough soon and we fill those empty seats. What a treat the rest of Peterborough missed! Best regards, Robert Colvin. Maria: 6 May - Saw you last night in Peterborough. PLEASE ensure you come back again! Absolutely stunning stuff. Will catch you again in Nottingham and Northampton. thanks again for a great evening. Maria xx Richard Folk: 8 May - Hello again David In case no one else contacts you I thought I would drop you a few lines about the Peterborough show. "This was the third time Sue and I had seen G2. Having seen two superb previous shows this was, if anything, even better still if that is possible. The music was, as usual, faultless but the friendly rapport built up with the audience made the evening really special. Terry is becoming an absolutely top class front man and creates such a pleasant atmosphere to the entire proceedings. I cannot think of a better night out. The ovation G2 received was thoroughly deserved. Musically I cannot surpass any previous comments I have made; each song is a gem in its own right. "Eleventh Earl of Marl" was a wonderful addition and the balance between the two sets was perfect. To anyone who has not seen G2 "Cinema Show", in particular, is just "out of this world"! It is unfair to single out anyone's performance but Jeff's drumming is just fabulous. As usual all the band were around after the show very willing to chat; a really nice way to end the evening. Thanks to all of you again. We wish you continued success and plan to see you in Mansfield later in the year. Can't wait! Richard and Sue Folk, Bourne, Lincolnshire." By the way David, I looked up the Mansfield show on the internet and the theatre has recently had a small fortune spent on it and it looks a really nice venue. Very best wishes Richard Roel vanEs: 9 May - David, Just a quick note to register our enjoyment of the evening in P'boro! Got tickets as there was a link from Think Floyd. Will see you again some time. regards, Roel van Es David Parish: 16 May - Just a quick note to say that I really enjoyed your show in Peterborough the other night, I drove over from King's Lynn with my younger brother (Genesis Fan) and press ganged a young business colleague of mine to come and get a musical education. Although we bought tickets at the door we managed to get front row. - excellent view & sounds and all of us enjoyed the show. Like me at my first G2 gig , my brother waas nervous of someone other than Genesis playing "our" precious music, but I told him it would be fine and after the first few bars you had him on board, but how I wish you'd add "I know what I like" to the set. Leas Cliff Hall - Folkestone - Kent Jeremy Hall: 1 October - Just felt compelled to put fingers to plastic once more! Just getting over Leas Cliff Hall gig yesterday! This was the best I?ve seen yet. You picked most of my favourite bits and put them all together. I think the audience must have doubled since the last time you played here and next time (PLEASE!) there should be even more. Anyone who has ever enjoyed this stuff will inevitably love what you do. There are no real weaknesses, it must require considerable talent to perform and it is all played very accurately. This unsolicited testimonial comes to you free of charge, apart from a polite request to come back again. Thanks again Jeremy Hall Jon: 1 October - Thanks for a great show at Folkestone last night guys, really enjoyed it & just wish I'd discovered you earlier to be honest. Unfair to single tracks out perhaps, but let's just say the Selling England by the Pound through to Wind & Wuthering era tracks were the best. Looking forward very much to the next shows in Kent. Keep doing a fantastic job Jon Inglett David Hussey: 1 October - Hello Guys I saw you at the Leas Cliff Hall in Folkestone on the 30th and just wanted to thank you for a great evening. The day being my birthday and the concert was the end to a great day. I never got the chance to see Genesis live and if they were half as good as you live I guess I missed a treat. I sincerely hope you will return to gig in Folkestone because I for one will be there. Great show and thanks for making my Birthday a memorable one. Best wishes and respect. David Hussey Phil Lovett: 2 October - Dear G2, Just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed the Leas Cliff Hall gig on September 30, 2004. What looked like a disappointingly small audience when we arrived at about 7.20 turned into a respectably sized and totally appreciative bunch once the show had commenced. The performance was outstanding, with superb musicianship, excellent mixing and impressive lighting. In particular, being a drummer myself (although a humble one in the presence of Jeff) I thought the drums came through just about as good as you can get! The set was well arranged and the performance just got better and better as the show went on. The highlight for me, and I suspect many, was Supper's Ready. As this progressed, the atmosphere was electric. However, when Terry appeared out of the smoke dressed in hood and cloak during Apocalypse in 9/8, the hairs on my skin raised and almost brought tears to my eyes. Fantastic. Phil Lovett Roger Fleisig: 10 October - Hi Guys. Just wanted to say thanks for another excellent concert at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone. The gig rounded off a great year of following (watching that is - not stalking!) G2 around the country, driving nearly nine hundred miles to see you at some six different venues. I hope 2005 sees you getting the size of audience your musicianship, professionalism and enthusiasm deserves. I for one certainly appreciate the effort you guys put in to bringing us the sound and essence of the music of Genesis. I believe your current show to be the greatest set Genesis never played. All of my favourite tunes are in there and I wouldn't change a minute of it! Thanks also to Dave on lighting and Paulo on sound (together with all the rest of the crew) for all their hard work in creating the atmosphere associated with a G2 concert. I'm now looking forward to seeing your show dates for next year, hopefully some near to me (you're wearing my car out) and to chat with after the gigs. Regards, Roger Fleisig P.S. David W - Any news on the lost chord of Los Endos? G2: Roger you are mad and magnificent! We have seen you so many times this year that your absence showed! Thanks so much for burning the petrol, oil and rubber and most of all for being a G2 stalwart. I do not plan to ever, ever forget the lost chord of Los Endos again! David. Medina Theatre - Newport - Isle of Wight Robin Winter: 24 April - Hi All, Bloody hell what a great night, Its been 12 years since Wind & Wuthering weaved its spell on me and I've been waiting (Genesis concerts included) ever since to experience its magic live. (do you do all in a mouses's night too!). ... and there it was... especially Earl of Mar/Blood on the Rooftops... it carried me away... I'm learning drums myself and desparetly trying to do the roll on Down and Out. regards Robin Winter Derek Stroud: 25 April - Guys, just a big thanks for the great show that you put on at Newport on the Isle of Wight on Friday. I'm just sorry that more Islanders didn't show up- their loss. I don't believe that enough publicity was put out. I saw you last year at the open air venue at Robin Hill and sat through the thunderstorm and vowed that I would see you again indoors someday. You did not disappoint with yet another great set- probably the best set that Genesis never did! Hope you'll make this an annual pilgrimage, Keep up the good work, Derek Stroud. Nigel Leppard: 26 April - Hi Dave Just had to write to say how much I enjoyed the show, you had a great sound...real nice balance and just right volume wise. 11th Earl of Mar was a triumph mate, excellent....'Blood on the Rooftops' had me going a bit weepy eyed, as did the climax of 'Suppers Ready' (but then that always does). And I gotta tell you 'Cinema Show' was absolutely kicking, that was one of the best live versions of the song I've experienced. Volcano & Los Endos didn't half kick arse too!!! Well done guys! shame the crowd wasn't bigger...I hope that won't put you off coming back, everyone that was there loved it. Nice one guys, hope the rest of the tour goes as well. Best wishes The Cosmic Lawnmower Tim: 27 April - Hi Saw your gig at Medina theatre on friday night. Just wanted to say thank you for a brilliant evening! I only saw Genesis live on The Way We Walk and Calling All Stations tours so I've only heard the songs you did on the albums. I was very impressed by how close you sound to the original band and as a tribute to Genesis you do them proud! My girlfriend who was bombarded by her brothers Genesis albums of the Gabriel/ early Collins era (see wouldn't like me revealing her age, but it begins with a 4) came with me and she said she would definitely come to see you again. Hope you carry on as long as G1 thanks Tim Price Anna: 28 April - Hello Dave, We haven't spoken before but my very good friend, Nigel Leppard has been in contact with you. I just wanted to say what a fantastic evening I had at Medina Theatre watching you all do your stuff. I've only just been introduced to early Genesis by Nigel, and what a good job he's done on me! You played all my favourite tracks: Firth of Fifth, Dancing With the Moonlit Knight, Horizons, Supper's Ready and then OH! you ended with The Cinema Show - I clasped my hands with delight when that was announced! I couldn't have asked for a better set list! This is the first time I've seen any early Genesis music performed live and I must say, I was really moved inside. I hope you get as much enjoyment out of playing as I did listening. PLEASE COME BACK SOON! Lots of Love, Anna xx :) Roger Fleisig: 28 April - Hi guys, I just wanted to say thanks for the fantastic concert at Newport, Isle of Wight. It was well worth the effort to come down for the weekend to catch up with you all again, I'm only sorry that so few of us were there on the night. You guys deserve a much bigger audience! Once again you played an excellent set and I particularly enjoyed your first airing of "Eleventh Earl of Mar" - great stuff! I'm definitely looking forward to see you performing "In the Cage" soon. I've now received the DVD of your Camberley concert and I can firmly recommend it to all fans of G2. Once again, thanks for keeping the music of Genesis alive and I'll see you again at your Hayes and Harlow gigs. Regards, Roger Fleisig Richard Bambridge: 29 April - Another superb evening - thanks guys! It was worth the fortune charged by the ferry company (who shall remain nameless) to make the trip from the mainland to the Isle of Wight gig. A shame it was a smallish audience and I have no idea why that should have been, but hopefully we made enough noise. Where are all the other South Coast gigs though? How about a soonish return trip to Camberley? Those of us (who didn't pre-order) at the IOW gig were the first to get hold of the DVD - a 'must' to have but a shame about the poor synchronisation - please shoot the production company! Anyhow, it was certainly an interesting comparison between the Camberley (yes I was there) and I.O.W. performance. Fullest of full marks for dropping 'Turn it on Again'. This is a good move chaps. The publicity poster says 'Recreating Vintage Genesis'. T.I.O.A. is definately a step too far in terms of, vintage. From the IOW performance, maximum points for 'Watcher of the Skies' which from where I sat sounded just as it should be played live... excellent! Sadly something seemed to go awry near the end of 'Suppers Ready', which is a great shame. The timing must be torturous to co-ordinate and as it was the best number at Camberley, perhaps this was a one-off and extremely forgiveable glitch. Great to hear the first public play of the new track - wonderful stuff. OK, I know I've banged-on about this before, but how about the inclusion of 'Return of the Giant Hogweed' or 'The Musical Box' in the play list? Thanks again guys and I look forward to seeing and hearing the band again when you next hit the south coast. Don't leave it too long!!! Richard Octagon Theatre - Yeovil - Somerset Jackie Hallowes: 4 November - Hi David, It was a really fantastic evening thank you very much. You are all excellent musicians and obviously love your music as you play it so well!!! It was also great to meet you and the rest of the gang and hope we didn't make nuisances of ourselves! I wanted to ask so many questions but didn't want to be annoying as I sometimes can... I bet you can't believe that can you!!!!!?... I don't suppose people are fully aware of the effort you all actually put in to your gigs but I think now I certainly have a better idea! We felt very much on a high when we left and now I'm on a bit of an anti climax, do you get that or are you just glad for a breather even though you do enjoy G2? I hope we made you feel that it is at least a little bit worth it (selfishly for me!!) I tried to whistle as loud as I could and felt sorry for the bloke next to me, Richard is used to it! Have a great Bonfire night, Christmas and New Year. Big smile! Jackie p.s. Thank you again you are brill! ('Afterglow' made me get a lump in my throat and my eyes went all misty!!) :) Palace Theatre - Mansfield Martin: 18 October - Just a note to say thank you to you and the lads for another great show in Mansfield last night, managed to say hello whilst buying a DVD afterwards (we were the ones from Northampton), managed to bring the wife and brother & sister in law along this time, they all thoroughly enjoyed a fantastic evening along with what I must say were a very enthusiastic and appreciative crowd. The 3 hr round trip was definately worth it. I cant, praise you guys enough, I enjoyed the show as much as when I saw you the first time in Northampton... looking forward to watching the DVD... hope we can get to see you again next year?? Have you thought about doing "The lady lies" off TTWT? All the best Martin Humphreys Ian Kilpatrick: 18 October - Dear Piers, you may remember me chatting with Jeff Walker and yourself after the superb concert in Mansfield last night. Amongst other things, we were discussing possible set openers as alternatives to "In the Cage" and I suggested "The Lamb..." which you acknowledged you were likely to be doing next month. On the way home (isn't it always), it struck me that a really good opener would be "The Return of the Giant Hogweed". Upbeat and with a signature keyboard intro, it could really set the scene. However, I notice that in last night's set, there was only one track from the Nursery Cryme album - and serene though it is, not a group track at that. What are your collective thoughts? Do you have any objections to playing tracks from that album (Fountain of Salmacis is another cracker of course)? Hope you had a good journey home and I look forward to your reply. Yours sincerely, Ian Kilpatrick. G2: We have no objection to playing the suggested tracks, we just haven't got there yet - it's a big catalogue! #:o) Lindsay: 18 October - Hello G2. We attended the Mansfield gig and were just so stunned by your amazing show, felt we had to tell you. We all enjoyed every second of the performance it was incredible. It brought back so many happy memories of the days when Genesis were around, we all felt we had grown younger by the end of the evening. Thank you so much for recreating Genesis so perfectly. We will spread the word so keep up the good work and please come back again to Mansfield soon. Thank you once again for such a brilliant performance. Lindsay & Dave Willetts, Ann & Ken Brown Richard Folk: 19 October - Just a few lines to say how much we enjoyed the Mansfield show on Sunday. This was our fourth G2 show and hopefully there will be many more to come. Sadly it was a similar tale to other shows in the East Midlands/East Anglia with too many empty seats. However, as usual the crowd were treated to another tremendous night and did their best to show their appreciation. I am pleased that you and the other band members enjoyed playing for us and were pleased by the response of the audience. Will not see you again before Christmas so I hope that you have a good Christmas. We eagerly await the list of G2 dates for 2005 and will be ticking off the ones in our region. I know how difficult it must be to keep a project like G2 on the road but we can't imagine life without a fairly regular visit to a G2 show; I have bought a t-shirt and a DVD so I hope that helps a bit! I went to see "Rush" at the NEC recently who were obviously brilliant. However, in terms of sheer enjoyment I can honestly say your Mansfield show even surpassed that concert! Very best wishes Richard and Sue Folk Steven Pollard: 18 October - Really nice to finally meet you last night Dave and as we said what a really superb gig the Mansfield show was, really deep and bassy and so powerful. As ever Entangled was just superb and I think has to be one of the finest pieces of music ever written. Keep up the great work and remember the Leeds City Varieties awaits your return! All the best to you all Steve p. Angie: 22 October - hi boys :o)) just want to tell you what a great time me and my hubby, gary, had at the mansfield gig on sunday night. it brought back so many memories... our first genesis gig was at the nec, birmingham around 1980. we were also lucky enough to see them for the reunion gig for womad... which was a bloody freezing cold wet day at the milton keynes bowl. wouldn't have missed it for the world though. i'm a bit of an old school genesis fan... loved the stuff up to duke. great music after then but never quite the same. i think i've joined your mailing list but just check for me... would love to come and see you again. love & hugs, angie coope xxx Godfrey Allison: 22 October - Hi David, I came along to Mansfield the other night and would just like to say that I thought you were all fantastic, if you can remember me from after the show I was the one with the young son who came and said hello. I hope you come to Newark next year so we can come and see and meet up with you all again. The music you play is brilliant, its just fantastic to come and see you play these great tracks from years ago. Keep up the good work. Kind regards to you all. Godfrey Allison. Michael Gregory: 22 October - Hi Guys. Just wanted to thank you for a brilliant evening in Mansfield. I never thought I would hear those sounds again played live. It brought back some great memories. I experienced the full roller coaster of emotions from the hairs standing up on the back of my neck to tears rolling down my face. I thought Firth of Fifth (my all time fave) was from another dimension, the rest ( watcher, Unquiet Slumber, Cinema Show, Lamb, Suppers Ready (I wasn't prepared for that one at all!), Dance on a Volcano/Los Endos, etc, merely awesome. Ripples would have made it perfect, but we can't have everything - or can we? The memory is already beginning to fade, but fortunately the DVD is at hand to recapture the experience (can you wear one of these things out?). Sunday night didn't help either. I was disappointed (for you) with the crowd, but I think what we lacked in numbers we made up for in noise (just think what it would have been like full!). Please come back again soon to the South Yorkshire/Deryshire/Nottinghamshire area (don't deprive us). Anyway, must go before the men in white outfits come for me (only joking). Once again thanks for a truly memorable evening. Mike Gregory Palace Theatre - Redditch - Worcestershire Steve Hammond: 21 October - Thank you to all the G2 ensemble for providing us with another great evening of live Genesis music last night at the Palace Theatre, Redditch. My 2 sons had their first G2 experience and we are all looking forward to a repeat next February at Oakengates. My only regret is that there should have been twice as many there to share the experience, although those who did make the effort were very appreciative. Anyone reading these reviews, please go and see G2 and spread the word. You will not be disappointed. I enjoyed the whole set. It is live, often very complex, music and you all play with great passion, accuracy and feeling and your honesty and good humour mean that the odd glitsch does not spoil the show. There was also some great lights work to enhance the experience. We are very privileged to hear Genesis music still being played live. Thanks again for travelling so far for a midweek gig with work the next day. Steve, Richard & Tom Lynn Ashford:: 20 October - Hello G2, Just to say thanks for a fantastic gig last night in Redditch, it was brilliant!! I'm only sorry the Palace wasn't bursting at the seams. I spent most of the gig with a big grin on my face, at hearing songs again that I hadn't heard in a while. Lots of happy memories brought to mind - thank you :o) Can't wait for you to come this way again. All the best Lynn Ashford Jason Lycett: 26 October - Hi Piers, I came to the gig the other night at the Redditch palace theatre i just wanted to say how fantastic it was. Im sure you may have felt that it wasn't your best night, and the turn out wasn't great, but for those who were there the feedback was great. Unfortunatley it was poorely advertised, and so many Genesis fans i knew, found out too late to come. I am a fellow Genesis keyboard player, and i like you spend hours trying to get the right sound. I was amazed how close you got. I was hoping to meet you after, but, oh well maybe next time! I was really intrigued by your ARP module, Chris was telling me that it is a prototype special at the moment?; sounded fabulous. The only possible tweak to your sound i thought could be perhaps a little less immediate vibrato on your flute on 'Suppers ready' . It might sound a little more natural with some delayed vibrato or introduce it via touch sensitivity. I only mention it because only us keyboard players would notice! I am trying to get get a good Leslie simulator also, and was curious what unit you use, The intro to 'Watcher' was great. i can get the sound, but not the leslie effect, if you have any good suggestions let me know! I currently use a Roland XP80 and Yamaha PSR 9000 and i am looking at an old EMU vintage keys which does have some good Mellotrons and organs. I thought that a great new track to add to your line up would be 'The Lady lies'. It has a pounding bass, great drum beat, really great chord changes and a great solo for you on your new ARP!. I play it to a midi file at home and it really works i think. Anyway just wanted to say despite the little hiccup (which always happens to me on this intro.), i thought it was a great evening and i really appreciate every hour you spent getting the sounds just right. Hope you come back to the west midlands soon. Cheers mate regards Jason Lycett James: 17 November - Hiya guys I went to the Redditch concert and thought it was absolutely brilliant - dead impressed with the musicianship and I loved the set - I saw Genesis twice and eyes closed you wouldn't know the difference!! One comment I would make is that having taken my wife and sister they were disappointed not to know any of the songs!! Admittedly they are not genesis fans but would have known Ripples and Follow you Follow me (from the era you concentrate on). Now I Know that Follow you Follow me type stuff is getting towards the more commercial Genesis and away from the purist masterpieces - but that sort of track would go down well with "other halves dragged along" who wouldn't know suppers ready from the lamb etc - and bums on seats etc Infact Turn it in again / Duke / Sarah Jane / behind the lines are good on three side live - and most people would know Turn it on again - although I appreciate that’s a different era Don’t bother with Invisible touch though!! Otherwise brilliant - many thanks - keep up the good work and please come to Brum again. When are you releasing the new CD? Cheers - in admiration James Bird Playhouse Theatre - Harlow - Essex Andy Spiller: 23 July - Great show last night in harlow! I don't think Iv'e seen the originals do any better, but why didn't you do "get em out by friday" in honour of being in Harlow? Andy. Peter: 23 July - Hi, Just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed the concert in Harlow last night. I was surfing the web a bit a couple of weeks ago (trying to find information about the Genesis film that I remember seeing in the late 70's) and happened upon you lot. Curious, I looked at your web site to see what you were and where you were performing. I could not resist when I found out that, at the closest venue to me, you were playing on my birthday. Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole event (as did my wife and friend who came along too) and was amazed at the sound you all achieved. Fantastic! Please let the others know. Regards, Peter Da'Costa. Stuart: 25 July - Hi all Excellent gig in Harlow last Thursday. Keep the Genesis stuff going and come back again...admire your musical expertise and enthusiasm. By the way, how do you post to the site and are you going to add a forum on the site at all? Cheers. Stu Pollock. Louis: 08 August - Dear G2, Myself and two friends embarked on a 120 mile round trip to see you at Harlow in July. Your show was terrific I have to say, well worth the journey, a view shared by the other two Genesis cohorts with me. The sets were deftly and skillfully played, the distinctive sounds faithfully interpreted and beautifully reproduced. Terry particualrly added great panache and honest fun to the procedings. It reminded me of my solo trip to Knebworth June 28th (I think) 1978 - my first ever viewing of a live band! The opener then was Eleventh of Mar, which as you can imagine, was stupendous, with the Moog Taurus 1 sensationally vibrating the ground. Putting my former live event producer hat on, if I have one comment, hopefully useful, I felt the bottom end generally on the sound at Harlow a bit light (although I was not expecting Knebworth vibration by any means). The powerful Moog Taurus sound (I actually have a cherished set myself) when combined with Mellotron strings/choir is the classic neck-hair raiser of the middle era. However, this in no way detracted for our enjoyment of your superb venture down memory lane. We have all vowed to see you again when you next venture into the home counties. Louis Backer. James Ramelli: 27 September - Hello G2, I had the good fortune to experience your set in Harlow and had a fantastic night. I brought along a friend who didn’t really know much of Genesis and you have converted him. I have been listening to Trick of a Tail for the last ten years after I nicked my dads copy, I now own ‘Trespass’ to ‘ Trick of the Tail’ and never thought I would get to hear my most favorite Genesis track, ‘Entangled’. I was moved by your rendition it was beautiful. I have only one gripe and it’s not about the performance, why o why couldn’t you have played ‘Get em’ out by Friday’ or ‘The Battle of Epping Forest’. Apart from that I will try to make as many gigs as humanly possible, thanks for giving us the chance to hear this amazing music live. Your fantastic. Cheers, James R The Marina Theatre - Lowestoft - Suffolk Kevin Darby: 15 March - Hello David......Hope I didnt burble on a lot of crap too much last night, but it was nice to have a chat. Like I said, It was a perfect show, all your hours of rehearsal etc have certainly paid off......special mention again to your sound man, all the best musicianship in the world is useless if the p.a sound is poor, but it was really excellent, with power and clarity. The lights were very well done also, although I think being on the East Coast caused the fog to come in towards the end!! I hope you all continue to enjoy playing together, and look forward to seeing you all again...Thank the rest of the boys for me, for a great night....Best Wishes.. Kev...........The YareBeats. Stuart Haggar: 15 March - Hi Terry. Just a quick note to congratulate the band on a superb concert last night. I must be honest and admit I approached the concert with a fair amount of scepticism. But within minutes of starting you had won me over along with the rest of the audience. You recreated that unique Genesis sound superbly, sending plenty of shivers up the old spine! Look forward to seeing you in the area again soon. Regards Stuart Haggar Stephen Harvey: 15 March - i would just like to thank you for a superb concert in lowestoft on the 14 th march. special praise to jeff the drummer. would be nice to hear more modern genesis. thanks stephen harvey Timothy Forster: 16 March - hi just wanted to say saw you at lowestoft, never been to a recreation gig before so a bit cautious,YOU WERE MAGNIFICENT!!..tim..please return at some stage! Michael Dobson: 18 March - Hi All Went to the gig at the Marina Theatre in Lowestoft on Sunday March 14th and saw you for the first time. I must say that my son and I were completely blown away by the performance and superlatives are inadequate to describe the show. I thought Entangled was absolutely sensational and just about stole the show for me. We hope that you will be returning to Lowestoft in the not so distant future and congratulations to Terry on a very impressive "homecoming" gig. It seems that The Darkness are not the only exceptional talent to emerge from these shores. Thanks for making an old Genesis fan very very happy and well done to you all in the team. Kind Regards Mike Dobson Brian Rumsby: 19 March - G2 GREAT SHOW IN LOWESTOFT ON SUNDAY HOPE YOU COME BACK SOON Peter: 10 September - Terry... you and the band were outstanding at the Lowestoft Marina earlier this year. Just to let you know we all appreciate your top class performance of this outstanding music. I think its getting to the stage where your renditions are sometimes more accurate than when the real band played live. You must practice more than they did. Will spread the word and bring some friends along to the next one. Over & out pete c. Moses Gate - Bolton - Manchester Shaun: 13 February - I’m about to see your band for the second time in Farnworth. The first time I saw you was in Ashton Underline about 8 months ago. You were out standing. I’ve seen most of the tribute bands but you are with out the best. Keep making people live the dream please do the Witchwood again .the north will be sad without you if you. Shaun Gallagher, a big fan. Dave: 15 February - Despite feeling bloody awful managed to attend the Moses Gate. At least the reception was top class. You've a dedicated following there, and among the few obvious 'locals' scattered in the crowd there was not one disapproving voice (amazing for such non-mainstream music). G2 as musicians are top class and I'd recommend them to anyone. The Genesis reproduction is very strong - only a few minor rough edges. The set list - personally I am a huge fan of the middle era and rather ambivalent about the Gabriel stuff. It was the first time I have ever heard middle-era Genesis played live, (except the montage in the Way We Walk tour). Having loved Genesis for 30 years it was a very special night for me to hear it. Of course though, being a middle-era nut, I was personally a little disappointed that coverage of W&W TotT &TTWT was thin and there were large swathes of Gabriel. G2: we rarely publicly respond to G2 feedback but feel compelled to post a reply to this one. You mention that you were "a little disappointed with the coverage of W&W TotT &TTWT". We do almost all of W&W and are about to add "11th Earl" which only leaves the "Mouse's Night" and Special Way" absent from our set. From TotT we do everything but "Mad Man Moon" and the title song. From TTWT we do "Deep in the Motherlode", "Many too Many" and "Follow you..." We didn't perform any from TTWT or "Robbery" and "Ripples" from TotT at the Moses, which isn't much considering the content and length of the set we played. As for the large swathes of Gabriel, the core of the show revolves around the double live "Seconds Out" album, which is exclusively Phil Collins not Peter Gabriel. Personal preferences apart, I'm sure your hard core fans are delighted by the set list, but any casual people at the gigs are going to be starved. I brought my girlfriend who loves Led Zep and most mainstream classic rock, but she didn't know ONE single track on the list until Wardrobe. If you include Follow You, and perhaps stretch to a late-Genesis pop song in the encore, it may not be purist, but it would increase your chances of being rebooked and drawing bigger audiences. (Floyd tribute bands have worked wonders in the last 2 years drawing thousands of punters who are not hardcore floydians to large venues by being more pop than progressive). Hmm, this is all sounding too critical. It was a great show and I'll come again and again when you venture north. I know the promoter of the Leeds City varieties and hope to attend and run a radio promo before you April gig there. Dave Shepherd G2: You mention that "your girlfriend didn't know ONE single track on the list until Wardrobe". How can you qualify your girlfriend as a "most mainstream classic rock" fan when the only Genesis song she knew was Wardrobe? This isn't a dig at either of you, we just don't see the logic. Now we are starting to sound defensive, which is so not the intention. Your feedback is welcome and the value is always acknowledged, G2. St David's Hall - Cardiff - Wales John Coward: 18 September - Well, to all of you really. I have just hugely enjoyed your wonderful show in Cardiff. I, like most people, know and love Genesis fron the commercial recordings, so this is what I want to hear. I immensely enjoyed all the Seconds Out material especially. One recalls Rchmaninov's comment after hearing his piano roll recording- "Gentlemen, I have just heard myself play" It was a shame you didn't have your own lights. Can you expand on your remark during the show about the "theatre's policy"? I am along-standing regular customer there, a will certainly complain loudly. I didn't like the way "the flower" bit went. I paid to hear it from you, not other members of the audience! One wonders if you have seen the Bootleg Beatles, who have a fairly polished show. I'm sure that seeing their act would give you ideas for your show. It was nice to see you in a venue where everybody was fairly well anchored to their own seats. I saw the Australian Pink Floyd in Cardiff's other large venue, where beer was freely available on the floor, throughout. All the constant movement of people, carrying and spilling beer everywhere, not say peopole heading for the toilets climbing over you every 30 secs really spoilt it. I look forward very much to your return. Next time you play in Wales, I'll be there! You have a huge and rich legacy to draw on, use it well, use it wisely. Good luck for the future, and never give up pursuing perfection! If I say nothing else, I must say THANKS. J L Coward Peter Duggan: 17 September - hi went to the concert in cardiff tonight an ecellent night out when your back in cardiff again my brother and i will be there. my brother had to drag me out of the house as i didn't want to go, glad i did now. best wishes to you all peter duggan G2: Every so often we get messages like this, where people say they were dragged to a show or weren't sure, but they came along anyway - and the post response is that they were glad they did! It really matters to us that we level the playing field so that we, both band and audience join in the magic of some good quality Genesis music. So a big thanks to ALL of you! G2. Simon: 18 September - Hi To Everyone. I came to the show last night at cardiff, what can i say i have followed genesis from 1980 on as far as live shows are concerned and i have never been treated to some of the classics as yo played last absolutly superb. i took my daughter of 14 along with her boyfriend of 16 and they did not stop talking on my way back to swansea on hoe good the night was. subsiquently iam having to take them to brecon in a few weeks. personally the highlights for me were Entangled Supper ready,Broadway Melody 1974 and my favourate which was performed as well as i have ever seen it performed was FIRTH OF FIFTH what an intro. Thanks for a great night see you in brecon. Martin Pook: 18 September - Hello Terry, I was at the G2 concert in Cardiff last night and had a great time. It was brilliant to hear the songs performed live and with such energy. It was a very good set list too. Congrats to you and the band on the show. The Los Endos closing was a blinder! I've not been to a G2 gig before, but will definitely be going again. Being an 'Englishman abroad' in Wales, I thought the reaction to the Union Jack outfit was funny. I think sometimes the Welsh forget they are actually part of Great Britain! Nice one. Thanks and see you next time, Martin. Andrew: 19 September - Hi, Went to the above ofn Friday and enjoyed the concert - sham it was not better attended. Was wondering if there was copyright reasons why you did not play anything later than 1976? I thought the idea of using costumes in the Peter Gabriel vein was good and you might wish to persue this further. Especially enjoyed listening to Entangled live Best Wishes Andrew Enticott. Tony Whittaker: 20 September - David, I saw G2 at st Davids Hall last Friday!! What can I say (Fantastic !!) I'm hoping to come to the Brecon gig too! The DVD is great I haven't stopped playing it since Friday! You really do the music proud. I am a musician myself and I know how difficult this stuff is to play. The only thing I would say about the show was the volume could have been louder, even so I had numerous, "hairs on back of neck" moments throughout the performance, especially Fly on a windshield and los endos. Keep up the good work and I hope to see you again. All the best!! Tony Whittaker. Chris Davies: 21 September - Many thanks for the show in Cardiff last Friday. It was brilliant, we really enjoyed it. Chris. Charles Young: 21 September - Dear David, Thank's once again thank's for another superb perfomance at St. Davids Hall Cardiff. A good time was had by all as I'm sure you will agree. It was good to meet up after the show for a chat, thank's for sparing us your time. All the best for now, pass on my thank's to all concerned at G2,regard's Charles. Duncan Reid: 21 September - Went to the show on Friday night and was completely blown away. I was lucky enough to see Genesis on the Seconds Out Tour and I cannot get over just how good Fridays gig was. Very very talented musically, and an incredibility accurate all round performance. To reproduce that quality is amazing. The set was excellent - great choice of songs from the classical Genesis era, and the whoever was on the mixing desk got the mix absolutely perfect. It was wonderful to get the chance to hear the songs from my formative years performed live once again, there were plenty of "goose bump" moments. It was a shame more people didn't turn up. Thanks very much it was fantastic - and by the way get a Welsh Dragon waistcoat for the gig in Brecon!!! Any Genesis fan who is tempted to go to a G2 concert - don't hesitate you will not be disappointed. Duncan Reid. G2: Paolo is the man on the desk and hats off to perfection, he is the man! Our sound and lighting crew are so often unsung so it is alway very nice to see them getting a mention, G2. Tameside Hippodrome - Ashton-under-Lyne Peter Ross: 11 October - Dear G2, Thanks for another brilliant show. To all those Genesis fans that filled the same venue a few months ago to see a certain Canadian outfit, can I say that you're missing out in a big way if you don't go and see G2! Peter Ross Colin: 12 October - I just thought i would drop you a line about the Fantastic show that the disappointingly small crowd witnessed on Saturday night. First time i have seen G2 and again like the majority of Genesis tribute bands i have seen live recently, i was blown away by the quality of your show!! From start to finish i experienced the old "Hairs on the back of the neck" stand up time and time again by the awesome music you lads played with Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show and Entangled being absolutely superb. A Top show all round. Once again congratulations and thanks for travelling the distance you did to play in Manchester, hope you play up North very soon, maybe the Witchwood again. Colin Wilde Tim Nicholson: 27 October - I hope you enjoyed the gig at the Thameside as much as we all did, and it was great to meet you all and chat afterwards. My wife now wears her G2 t shirt for bed most nights and I have watched your DVD 3 times since the show, very proffessional and well worth whatever it was I paid for it? Keep on playing and we'll keep on paying All the best Tim The Limelight Club - Crew - Cheshire Tim: 16 February - Hi , Just wanted to drop you a line to say last nights show was stunning, the goose pimple effect was well and truly achieved. 6 of us came over from N. Wales to see you and everyone agreed that was a remarkable performance. When we saw you at the North Wales Theatre last year I was very impressed, I had just seen the "Musical Box" perform at Manchester and was obviously making comparisons, at that time I would have said Musical Box was the certainly the more accurate show, but having now seen both bands twice I would say your show definitely has the edge. I'm very much a fan of Genesis music up until "The Lamb" then I get a bit picky over the next 2 albums, you reminded me that there is some wonderful atmospheric pieces on the post Gabriel albums and you played them with precision and most importantly real feeling. I have seen Genesis shows from the mid seventies to the early Nineties and what you did last night was deliver some beautiful music more professionally and with more feeling than Genesis themselves have done on occasions. I nearly fell off my stool when you played Fly on a windshield it was powerful and superbly mixed as were most of the tracks, hats off to the guys on the desk. In my experience fans of Genesis tend to be quite intense and analytical about the music so anyone who has the guts to get up and try to reproduce that has to expect the audience will scrutinise every note played, we did and came away feeling we had just witnessed something very very special. Finally I just wanted to say a special thank you to the keyboard player for a providing added entertainment with his on stage frowning, scowling and grimacing, I thought all the toys were going to come out of the pram in the middle of Cinema Show. Kind Regards Tim Nicholson. Andy: 16 February - I saw you at The Limelight in Crewe last night... ...It was totally excellent. I overheard someone on the way out say "that's set me up for the rest of the week" How true!! Seconds Out on VERY loud in the car today!!!! But...(there's always a but!!!) With having such a top Phil Collins sound-a-like in Terry, why do you not do a few later songs, from Duke, Abacab, Mama, & Invisible Touch? With your lights and sound I'm sure the likes of Duchess, mama, Home by the Sea, abacab etc...would go down well. Hopefully you will be back in The Limelight again soon. Thanks for a fantastic show. Long may you continue to keep us old Genesis anoraks happy!!!!!!!! Regards, Andy Harrington. Stephen Taylor: 16 February - Thank you for a brilliant show last night, It is a while since you last came to the Limelight but last night was well worth the wait. Please don't stay away too long in future, and I am already looking forward to the next gig. Best regards, Steve. Anthony Walker: 16 February - Just a quick note to say what an excellent gig last night at the Limelight. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as the crowd did - it seemed like it. We had to shoot off after the encore so didn't get chance to say hello and try to acquire the second CD. A cheque will be on its way soon. I've seen a good number of bands there over the last few years and would put G2 on a par with my particular favourite, the superb Yes tribute, Fragile. Fragile always go down well here and have a good following but there were more there for you last night which was pleasing as it is a while since you were last in town. I see you have quite a few gigs throughout the coming months - any chance of coming back again later in the year? I know Ray Bispham likes his Genesis and I would have thought that he might want to have an alternative to 'In The Cage' who now appear here twice a year. They are good & I usually go along to support them but last nights gig blew them out of the water as far as I am concerned. So follow that next time! Hope the effect of the Middlewich curry has calmed down now! All the best. Tony and Jill Tony Pennance: 20 February - jesus christ .... fly on a windshield.... totally gobsmacked, made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck! have seen them all now, you were the last on my list, and most definately the best! have some half decent shots you can have to use if you wish, just send me an address! best wishes tony pennance. hope to see you again in the near future Jill Walker: 25 February - Hi guys Sorry it’s a bit late after the event, but just had to write and say a huge thanks for a fantastic gig on Sunday 15th February at the Limelight. It was a long wait since I last saw you but well worth it. So many favourites its hard to pick a highlight from such a great set list. All played superbly I must say! What great musicians. Firth of Fifth is probably my all time favourite Genesis track and it was stunning. Piers is a star – and certainly on a par with Mr T.B. himself. Those spine tingling moments don’t always happen when listening to tribute bands, but G2 hit the spot every time, especially Afterglow which was just heavenly. Great songs, great musicianship, great gig, great G2enesis – I miss you more – so please come back “up north” soon. Love Jill The Robin2 - Bilston - West Midlands Steve Hammond: 13 February - Dear G2, Thank you all for a great evening last night. I've seen Piers' other band and a certain Canadian band 3 times each last year and really enjoyed every night. Last night was just as good and it was great to see you all so obviously enjoying it as much as we were. The only thing I missed was the flute. I saw my first Genesis concert in 1973 but hadn't heard some of the songs you played last night live for many years. You brought back a lot of memories for me, especially Earls Court 1977. I'm looking forward to bringing the next generation to see you at Oakengates Theatre in September as my 2 sons are already Genesis fans! Thanks also for taking time to say hello afterwards. I managed to say thanks to all except Jeff. Good luck with the rest of the tour and enjoy the summer. See you in September, Steve Hammond. Roger: 19 February - just felt i had to send a message to say how much my friend and i enjoyed your show recently at the robin club in bilston.this is the third time we have seen you, and we shall continue to support you whenever you are in the midlands area. fantastic show, look forward to seeing you again soon. TWO OLD BRUMMIE ROCKERS!!!!!!! The Standard Music Venue - London Dave Mac: 13 June - Guys, I was there in Walthamstow and thought I should tell you that it was better than the last two times I saw you in Southend, although 'at home' it means it is easier to get home. I told Dave recently that I had bought a DVD of Genesis in 1976 on e-bay and heard (and saw) things on that I had missed in any bootlegs or live releases and now I can see how 'king accurate you guys are - especially Chris but don't tell him I said so, I wouldn't want him to get a big head; though that wouldn't be easy in those sandals! I was impressed that the "In the Cage" is now included, a bold move. However I notice in the possibles that Mad Man Moon is never included, and was never attempted by the originals in any shape or form nor Your Own Special Way - I guess I am too romantic but my wife hasn't noticed. So get back to Southend soon. "It hardly seems to matter now..." Dave Mac. Paul Williams: 16 June - Hi Dave, Just a brief line re last Friday's Standard gig (my first for a good 18 months alas!!). Just as I remember it really, an excellent set delivered with the usual aplomb by the boys (we'll skip over the "In The Cage keyboard faux pas" and Chris' blank moment at the beginning of Blood On The Rooftops cos hey ...shit happens right!). The main reason for the email though is whilst Piers is obviously an excellent keyboard man doing some incredibly difficult work I feel that his sound is somewhat lacking when it comes to the main body of your repertoire (ie Wind & Wuthering onwards). The Gabriel era sound is great on the whole but I think the keyboard rig is really not getting over the Banks' sound post Lamb. A particularly glaring limitation was the lack of a recognisable "choir" sound which is so important to the whole Genesis phenomenon. In all honesty the sounds generated by Neil's keys rig were far superior to what Piers' kit is able to generate. I know Neil did a lot of work taking samples of authentic contemporary keyboard patches and that hard work was amply rewarded with what I consider to be far and away the best Genesis keyboard sound of any of the Genesis tributes Ive been lucky enough to see (including ReGenesis and The Musical Box) - is there any way the group could get hold of Neil's patches and invest in the appropriate kit to deliver the sound? I really think the whole experience (especially now your playing the theatre venues predominantly) would be even further enhanced if you were able to get back Neil's total Genesis sound. I feel a bit of a fraud making criticisms but I know you guys know its in the interest of keeping alive the authenticity of some of the greatest music ever written. Cheers and all the best Paul. G2: Take your points on board Paul, sometimes the playing or the sound recreation isn't correct, or the acoustics or sound systems in venues fail to complement the intention. We work bloody hard to get it right. In the theatres we use a substantial sound system, but for smaller venues it isn't scaleable or affordable and their sound systems can sometimes struggle to deliver against a back-line as demanding as ours. What you lost in sound though, was more than compensated for in the intimacy, passion and energy that is unique to this very precious music venue. Finally there is always a place in what we do (you/me/all of us) that is individual. Your feedback is welcome and always related. That is a major consideration and factor in the band and we take that on board. You are the first person to comment that Neal's sounds are better than Piers'. Every other comment without exception says Piers' sounds and playing are better and I have to agree with that view. That said, "we all know what we like and we like what we know", again Genesis seem to have the answer? You are certainly not a fraud and as always we wouldn't want anything less than your honesty, G2. Wyvern Theatre - Theatre Square - Swindon Philip Ward: 18 March - Hi there short note to say that the concert was absolutely amazing... could not have been better Many thanks, just a shame not more people turned out (it did clash with the footie) out but I'm sure that will change if you keep performing like that ! Thanks again Cheers Phil Ward Stevie Man: 19 March - just to say how much we enjoyed the show at the wyvern theatre swindon on wednesday evening, first time we"ve seen you in concert, loved it shame the crowd was on the low side. all the best. Steve Richardson: 19 March - Hi piers i just thought i would congratulate you on a fantastic gig at Swindon last night. I think your accuracey in your playing is unbeliveable. I know more than the average genesis fan just how hard the firth of fifth is to play, as i myself can play the complete piece on keyboards (not half as good as you). That piano intro and keyboard solo is a nightmare. Terry told me after the show that you work out all the songs without the music. I have the complete sheet music for the firth for keyboards including piano intro and keyboard solo and would gladley send you a copy. Please let me know if you are interested. Keep up the great playing. all the best Julian Farmer: 20 March - Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your visit to Swindon Wyvern Theatre last Wednesday. I felt that the smallish crowd thoroughly enjoyed the set that you all played, it's a shame a few more didn't bother to turn out to see the show. Swindon can be annoyingly apathetic sometimes. The set selection was just about spot on for my taste as it covered the era that I grew up through, great songs, great memories. One slightly negative comment. I just wish you'd turned up the Moog bass pedals a tadge. I've been listening to Trick of the Tail this morning and their contribution to the Genesis sound cannot be underestimated. I also remember seeing Chris Squire and Yes and the sound and Resonation ?!? produced by the pedals was awesome. Hardly anyone uses them nowadays so I was really looking forward to seeing / hearing them in action - loudly. Anyway only a small complaint as the evening was great, the track selection great and the pure musicianship was superb, not sure if it makes me want to give up or try harder to get better. I will definitely come and see you again-Well done!!! Best regards Julian Farmer Bits'n'Bobs Tim Waite: 2 January - Happy new year one and all! I look forward to seeing you at the Wyvern in march again! You did a excellant show there last year, keep up the good work. Regards Tim. Jeremy Hall: 27 February - Just had to write to beg you to play in kent before september- can't wait that long! First saw you at The Manor, Biggin Hill in early 2002. Then again at Leas Cliff Hall Folkestone. Thoroughly enjoyed both. You seem to have picked the best stuff to do - I like all Genesis music but have a particular fondness for Wind and Wuthering and Trick of the Tail. To me Steve Hackett and Tony Banks were the best influences on the Genesis sound that I first encountered on Alan Freeman's (remember him?) Saturday show on Radio 1 in the Seventies. Have loved the music ever since and have most albums - even the most recent which I really enjoyed. Could do with Mouse's night added to your set - instrumental second half really. I love that. Certainly your playing got the old goose pimples going- the acid test if ever there was one. Keep going and please please come to Kent more! Great show that leaves those unfamiliar with the sound a little baffled. I always found that I had to listen to a Genesis album at least three times before I became hooked on it. I guess it doesn't have immediate appeal. Your show should be made compulsory viewing to save us from the trivial lightweight uncomplicated crap that is served up today! Best of luck for the future Jeremy Hall Tim Wickington: 19 March - Hi, Saw you guys at Southend last year... fan-bl**dy-tastic! Are you planning on doing there again this year? Closest I can see to me is Harlow otherwise... that is a bit of a yomp away. Ta, Tim Simon Ivory: 20 May - You did a gig in Clacton in late 2002 - excellent. Thought the turnout wasn't bad either. No plans to return ? If it's advertised well enough, you'll draw fans from 40 miles - give it another go. Clacton show was superb, Regards Simon Ivory. Tony Crowther: 02 June - Hello G2 I saw your set for the first time last year at City Hall, Salisbury and I thought you were truly tremendous. What a fantastic selection of material which you perfomed really well. However I have two critisism's so delete now if your not bothered. Still there? Ok (1) Why don't you take up a similar stage position as the original? (2) I think the drummer lost his way during Fof F cos it definitely got faster during the last third. That's it Your great Play Salisbury again please! Tony Javier Montes: 04 June - Hi all, I've seen the preview of your live performance at Camberley and I have ben stunned by the quality, not jus the lighting and effects, and all, but the music. I've played a hundred times my Seconds Out record and through some passages I thought you must have just been on playback! I can't believe the quality! I hope I can get a ticket for your show at Cardiff on September the 17th! Keep up the good work! Charles Young: 29 June - Hi David, just a quick line to tell you that I took delivery of the much awaited Live at Camberly video this morning.Excellent quality in both sound & picture, also a stark reminder(if one was needed) of how Bloody good you chaps are.Looking forward to September now with even more anticipation, all the very best to all concerned, bye for now, Charles. Eamonn Flanagan: Postd 28 September - I have seen you all over the country since G2 (the event) from Clacton, to Crewe to a more recent night out in sunny Peterborough to some moses gate pub somewhere near the north pole... but... I have been trying to drag my brother (big big genesis fan who introduced me to their music in 1978) to one of your gigs for so bloody long now, and every time it has looked likely, something happened to thwart my efforts. We were both born in Newark and still have family there, but couldn't make the Palace gig. I live near Northampton but was in Greece last week. Sod! Big brother is a great fan of the Seconds Out era BIG SOUND but the only tribute gig I have managed to get him to has been reGenesis doing the lamb thing a couple of years ago. Fine, but it didn't hit the spot. We are both very big Selling/Trick/Wind/ATTWT fans and with this in mind, I have taken the day off work on Friday here in Northants and I will be travelling to his house late afternoon in... YES YOU GUESSED IT... Cheltenham. We'll be there... ME... again!!! but this time with my brother and his wife... centre seats, half way back... ...perfect. I'm not too tough to admit that your versions of a couply of little ditties, esp Entangled, have reduced me to a quickly covered up tear on a number of occasions, and your Firth / Cinema / Rooftops just leave me smiling in my seat almost as much as YOU do on stage. Yet again, I await your gig with much anticipation not to mention the shivers up the spine at the thought of it. Yes... I love Face Value. Yes I love Suppers Ready from Italy. Yes I love Regenesis... and Yes, I admired Musical Box doing what they do, even if it does come across as a little clinical... but you guys throw it at me like no others... with guts, finesse and that big big sound. I've got that pre-glow... and I await the afterglow!! So... if it is cancelled at short notice... you'll all be needing more than bloody sponsorship mate!!! Plaster of Paris aint cheap you know! Eamonn Flanagan. Steven Posted: 30 September - hello there just quick question? i live in lincoln i saw your show at newark palace theatre last year it was brilliant. please can you give me any idea when a show will be held in lincoln? thank you steven richardson Gary Jepp: 5 October - Hi G2. Just to say PLEASE dont forget your fans in Norfolk & Suffolk. Have been to several gigs over the last 3 years, travelling many miles to do so, and been impressed by every one. Band just gets better & better! Unfortunately no gigs are shown for us in 2004. Please give us 1 show at least... SOMEWHERE!! Michael Sowden: 6 October - Please come back to Leeds soon. We need you. Regards Mick. Steve Biddle: 04 November - Hi,Just wondering when you will be back playing down in Kent again, as I was at your excellent gig in Folkestone a while ago... Regards, Steve Christian Antico: 29 December - Thank you for sending me the G2 CD. I'd like to congratulate the band for the work you made. Since I received your CD I can't help listenning to it. I'm longing to receive the DVD. You are genious and even as good as the original genesis. I hope you'll keep in memory my email so that you could keep in touch to anounce your forthcoming concerts in Italy or in France. Happy new year for G2. Friendly. Christian Antico |
